Halo: Combat Evolved is 2,001 military science fiction first-person shooter video game developed by Bungie and published by Microsoft Game Studios. The first game of the Halo franchise, was released on November 15, 2001, as a launch title for the Xbox gaming system, and is considered the platform "killer application". More than five million copies sold worldwide in November 2005. Microsoft released version of the game for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X in 2003, and the surrounding storyline adapted and developed into a series of novels, comic books, and the live-action web series. Hello arranged in the twenty-sixth century, the player assumes the role of Master Chief, a cybernetically enhanced supersoldier. The player is accompanied by Cortana, an artificial intelligence who occupies the Master Chief neural interface. Players battle various aliens as they attempt to uncover the secrets of the eponymous Halo, a ring-shaped artificial world. The game has been praised for elements like story, players can employ a variety of strategies, and its multiplayer mode; However, the repetitive nature of the level design was criticized by some reviewers.

Halo has been hailed as one of the greatest video games of all time, and ranked by IGN as the fourth best first person shooter ever made. The popularity of the game has led labeled as "clone Halo" and "Halo killer", applied respectively to games either similar to or anticipated to be better than that. In addition, the game inspired and was used in the Red vs. video series Blue fan-created, is credited as the "first big success" of machinima (a technique using real-time 3D engine, often from a video game, to make animated films).
