Hexen II is a video game developed by Raven Software, published by id Software between 1996 and 1997 for PC.

Distributed by Activision, it is the third game in the Heretic / Hexen series, and the last of the Serpent Riders trilogy. As for Hexen and Heretic, Raven released the game source code in 2000. This time the code was made available under the GNU license, allowing third parties to develop the game for different platforms, such as Linux.

As in the first two games, a world was enslaved by a powerful demon, a Serpent Rider named Eidolon, the most powerful and oldest of the three snakes. The player travels to different continents, each with different characteristics (Medieval, Mesoamerican, Ancient Egyptian and Greek-Roman) and must destroy enemies, solve puzzles and continue the search for Eidolon through several intersections in the levels.

Built on a modified version of the Quake engine, it is a video game based on the experience for single player, but also has a multiplayer section. There are four different classes to choose from for your character, each with their own abilities. The Paladin is based on offense, the Crusader defense, the Murderess on stealth, and the Necromancer on magic.

The improvements from Hexen and Quake include an environment that can be demolished (in part), mounted weapons, and unique skills in role-playing style. How Hexen, Hexen II uses a system of selecting layers (called hub system). These centers have connections to various levels where a choice made in a level can have effects on others.

In 1998, it published an expansion pack called Hexen II: Portal of Praevus containing new levels, new enemies and a new playable character, the "demoness". It presents a new story, and focuses on trying to resurrection of Eidolon made by Praevus magician, and the levels to cover are in Chinese-Tibetan style.

Immediately after the destruction of Eidolon, the most powerful of the three Serpent Riders, descends upon the world a terrible winter. Investigating the causes of this abnormal climatic effect of Hexen II heroes discover that the Praevus magician intends to resurrect the three Serpent Rider. After a long journey the four heroes manage to find and defeat the evil wizard, which disappears in a flash of light. So the spirits of the Serpent Riders (On Sparil, Korax and Eidolon) rise in flight and disappear forever into the void.
